Digital? Cloud? Modern And Cost-Effective? Surprise! It's The Mainframe

The new partners have integrated BMC Cost Analyzer for zEnterprise and BMC MainView with Compuware Strobe, thus providing workload management, real-time identification of performance issues, and insight into inefficient application code, respectively.

“BMC and Compuware are responding to this urgent market need by innovating and collaborating in a way that is unprecedented among mainframe ISVs [independent software vendors],” according to Chris O’Malley, CEO of Compuware. “And that directly addresses the twin issues of improving the mainframe’s performance economics and simplifying mainframe operations for a new generation of IT professionals.”

Such cooperation aligns well with IBM’s vision for z Systems. “We’re happy Compuware is helping with performance and tuning,” Mauri says. “They’re helping clients get more value from their mainframes.”

In the final analysis, today’s mainframes are the fully modern workhorses of enterprise transactions, and can cost-effectively support both the rise in mobile traffic as well as the enterprise’s move to the cloud.

“Let’s settle the fact that this is not a debate between the platforms,” O’Malley insists. “It’s got to be centered on the fact that we’ve got to use technology to compete in this world market.” The old maxim ‘the right tool for the job’ assuredly applies in the digital world.

Mauri sums up the story nicely: “In 2014 we looked at the top 4,500 retailers that made up Cybermonday in the United States. If you took all the transactions from all 4,500 of those retailers on the 2014 Cybermonday, a single z13 could run 100 Cybermondays every day, 365 days of the year.”

Given the mainframe can not only run 100 Cybermondays, but can do so cost-effectively, makes it an important consideration for any enterprise digital transformation strategy.
